Seth Wenig/Pool via REUTERS TRUMP FOUND GUILTY Donald Trump became the first US president to be convicted of a crime when a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star ahead of the 2016 election. The 12-member jury pronounced Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts he faced. Now, the judge overseeing the case will soon face a monumental choice: whether or not to sentence him to time behind bars. Prison time is rare for people convicted in New York state of felony falsification of business records, but not unprecedented. We have an explainer on what's next for Trump.  His supporters, enraged by the conviction, flooded pro-Trump websites with calls for riots, revolution and violent retribution. IN OTHER NEWS The US and Chinese defense chiefs locked horns on Taiwan in their first face-to-face meeting in two years, but both sides emphasized the need to keep military-to-military communications open. US President Joe Biden has quietly allowed limited use of US arms to strike inside Russia. South African parties are gearing up for coalition talks as the governing African National Congress looks set to fall well short of a majority for the first time in 30 years of democracy. With results in from 57.3% of polling stations, it had 41.9% of votes, a precipitous drop from the 57.5% it secured in the last national election. The Israeli military has lifted a ban on the sale of food to Gaza from Israel and the occupied West Bank as its battlefield offensive chokes international aid, according to Palestinian officials, businessmen and international aid workers. Consumer prices in the 20 countries that share the euro rose by 2.6% year on year in May, inching away from the ECB's 2% goal after increases of 2.4% in the previous two months. China's manufacturing activity unexpectedly fell in May, as a protracted property crisis in the country continues to weigh on business, consumer and investor confidence. The official manufacturing purchasing managers' index dropped to 49.5 from 50.4 in April, below the 50-mark separating growth from contraction. TikTok is working on a clone of its recommendation algorithm for its 170 million US users that may result in a version that operates independently of its Chinese parent and be more palatable to American lawmakers who want to ban it, according to sources with direct knowledge of the efforts. More than $18 billion worth of cryptocurrency has moved into a new type of platform which offers investors rewards in exchange for locking up their tokens, in a complex scheme that analysts warn poses a risk for users and the crypto market.
