how can I help you ?

Ever since I was little, I wanted to be helpful.

Picture lil ADHD Jack trying to help his mother with the house chores …

But always getting distracted by all the things he could help her with!

… and eventually giving up due to overwhelm.

The intent and will to help was there.

But the method wasn't.

Far from it.

I actually felt I was getting worse every day.

And I started feeling less useful, less valuable, and less appreciated.

If I could turn back time, I would go back and hug lil Jack.

Because things would turn out to be alright in the long run.

The story has an interesting - and happy - ending.

One day, overwhelmed as usual, mom told me:

"JACK.

Just ask me how you can help.

And then focus on completing just that one thing.

You know…

You can't be helpful to people, unless you know what they really want."

And that 13-word phrase turned my world around.

I have it on a post-it note on my desk.

Reminding me that I can still help people, one step at a time.

So, in the spirit of following mom's advice …
